Swift Run Cottage

Located on Virginia’s Route 33, in a Blue Ridge Mountain pass, Swift Run Cottage is a historic building with granite and quartz stone walls over two feet thick.  From the spacious back deck you can hear our trout stream as it makes its passage into Mutton Hollow.

Originally an old mercantile from the 1920’s selling groceries and gas, this building has been restored to become a delightful three bedroom cottage.  It includes a full kitchen,  Queen beds in all three bedrooms, and a 32” flat screen TV in the family room. The sitting room is made more cozy with its electric fireplace. The building includes a full bathroom downstairs and a toilet/sink combo added to one of the upstairs bedrooms.  Each bedroom and the living room have beautiful views across the creek toward the mountains and Skyline Drive.

Swift Run Cottage is located in the ideal place for the “outdoor oriented” group or family looking for a Blue Ridge Mountain base location for their hiking, hunting, fishing  and adventuring.  The cottage is conveniently located close to Va. Highway 33 where it crosses the Blue Ridge and passes through Shenandoah National Park.  The National Park boundary is a half mile away and the entrance to Skyline Drive and Park facilities is two miles away where the mountain tops are reached.

Built in the early 1900’s the building originally served mountain travelers and mountain folk as the local supply store and gas station.   Over the years the original building has been added to and transformed into a cozy mountain cottage that sleeps six with queen beds in three separate bedrooms.  A fully equipped kitchen is included and the downstairs living areas are comfortably appointed and include a 32” flat screen TV with Dish Network.

Since we ourselves are dog owners, we know how hard it is to find accommodation that not only permits, but has the ideal set up for the needs of our canine family members.  With five acres of fields, and eight hundred feet of frontage on Swift Run River, including a doggy swimming’ hole, what more could a dog ask for.

Trout fishing is permitted and encouraged in our river, the Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries regularly stocks this river with trout just below our property.  There are also a number of other prime trout fishing waters close by  including South River and the headwaters of the Rappahannock.

This area abounds in wildlife since we are surrounded by National Park and Conservation properties.  Animals we have seen on the property and in the area have included, deer, bear, lynx, fox, raccoon, coyote, skunk, groundhog, possum and mice.  Since the Blue Ridge Mountains are used as a flyway for so many bird and butterfly species this is an ideal base for bird watching.   Watch out in the fall or you might encounter a passing cloud of migrating ladybugs.

The hot tub on the back deck, where the sounds of our river can be heard, is the ideal respite from a day of hiking the many National Park trails.  Overlooking the valley and river the deck includes a barbeque and outside eating area.  Our dogs love lying out on this deck, watching the local animal life and soaking up some sun.

Only eight miles away the historic and beautiful Shenandoah River flows through Elkton and on down through the Page Valley.  Included in your rental of this property are two single Kayaks and one double Kayak, with paddles and life jackets.  These are available for your use on the river.  If you require transportation to and pick up from the river, depending on the timing of your stay, this may be available for a fee.

This property is not for those seeking the high end service of B & B type of accommodation.  It is designed for the budget minded family or group seeking cozy, comfortable and convenient accommodation in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.   We welcome those who may be through hiking the Appalachian Trail,  we include free pick up and drop off from the trailhead at Rt. 33 and Skyline Drive, which is only 2.5 miles from the cottage.

In addition to all the outdoor activities this cottage is ideally located for visiting wineries, historic presidential and civil war sites, Universities and all the other great tourist attractions central Virginia has to offer,  many within a half hour drive.  We look forward to seeing you soon.
